In January of 2018, while doing health assessments with student nurses at a poor orphanage in Haiti, I met a sweet little girl with a beautiful smile who changed my heart forever.  She had a filthy pair of flip-flops on her feet, and as I looked closer, I saw that the flip-flops were so worn that only the front part of each remained.  The children at the orphanage couldn’t wait to show us their dorm rooms, yet they were bare and dingy with no electricity and the toilets were not working.

I returned to the US wanting to understand the plight of children in Haiti and to do something about it.  I knew that an earthquake killed 300,000 people in Haiti in 2010, but I had no idea of the extent of the devastation.  This little orphanage of 25 children and a school of between 60- 100 children are run by a Haitian Christian minister and his wife.  They are loving and caring, yet they struggle constantly to provide for the children in their care.

This is why we partnered with them, and with your support, we can actualize our mission to serve children in need.

Our Primary Goals in Haiti

In Support of the Orphanage

We have identified four key goals that will allow us to provide optimal support to the orphanage and school.

Support the Children

Support all of the children in the orphanage; promote and encourage their health, wellness and success providing pathways to support their education from grade school through college if they are so inclined.

Promote
Self-Sustainability

Encourage and support the orphanage to get to the point where they are self-sustaining—by growing their own food and selling the excess or selling things that the children make to buy necessities that they can not grow or make.

Support Education & Learning

Identify the needs of the school, and facilitating the delivery of needed resources and supplies.  We plan to provide them with educated faculty to fill in the positions that they currently do not have the funding to fill.

Provide Jobs

We know translators in Haiti who are bright, caring, college educated  people with families to support and no full-time jobs. We plan to interview these individuals for full time positions at the school and orphanage.

Our Progress

On our last trip to Haiti with a group, we raised money to buy the children at the orphanage a few months supply of food. However, the children at the orphanage and the school need food every day. For the school children lunch is often the only meal they have all day.  Recently, due to severe civil unrest issues, the cost of food has doubled.  Due to a generous donation to the charity, we were able to supply the orphanage with rice, beans, oil and spaghetti to get them through another month, but we need your help to continue to support the children’s needs.
